This APELL Mining Manual provides a framework for preparing an Emergency Response Plan that can be used by mine management, emergency response agencies, state officials and local communities. Introduces the generic objectives and organizational outline of UNEP’s Awareness and Preparedness for Local Emergencies (APELL) programme, covers risk factors specific to the mining industry, and describes how APELL can be applied to mining industry. Case studies are also presented that illustrate the consequences of mining accidents, underscoring the vital nature of robust emergency preparedness.
The Manual will be helpful to mining companies and communities in two ways. Firstly, it will contribute to raising awareness of the importance of emergency preparedness at the local level by standing up to accidents and risks in the mining industry, both within companies and in communities. Second, it will help companies, communities, and emergency response providers thoroughly prepare for the work required.
